What is
Greenware?
Greenware is not ready to paint. Greenware is what all ceramic pieces are before the piece has ever been
fired. It is only clay that is bone dry. It is very brittle and must
be fired to maturity. A piece is mature only when it has been fired in a
Kiln to a Cone 04-03. If you purchase Greenware, you will need to
clean all seam lines and any imperfections and add any detail to the item you
purchased. After you are finished cleaning your item (s), you will need to
fire it/them in a kiln to a cone 04-03. After it has been fired in a kiln,
it is Bisque and
it is ready to be painted. For reference materials, see our "How-To"
Section.
How
do I clean Soft-Fired Greenware?
Greenware is soft fired so it will be able to be shipped.
Greenware is only clay but when it is soft fired, it is stronger and can be
handled, but it is still GREENWARE.
Soft-fired greenware can still be cleaned and can still have underglazes applied to it, just like greenware that has not been soft fired.
To Clean:
Put your soft-fired piece into a deep bucket of water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. After your piece has soaked, place a large thick towel onto your lap and remove the item from the bucket of water onto your towel in your lap. Use your standard greenware cleaning tools and use a Wet Scrub (if you need more information on a Wet Scrub, contact us)to clean away mold lines, area nicks, and scratches, add any detail you desire. After your piece is cleaned to your satisfaction, dry on a shelf to a bone-dry stated.
To fire:
After your piece is dry or the underglazes that you applied to it are dry, you will need to fire the piece to maturity. For a piece to be fired to maturity it will need to be put into a Kiln and fired to a Cone 04-03. Once your piece has fired to a Cone 04-03 temperature in a kiln, you can now paint your piece either with Opaque Stain paints of your choice or you can now apply a glaze paint over the underglazes you applied to your piece before you fired it to maturity. Underglaze color never looks as bright or is it its true color until it has a glaze paint applied onto it and fired. Let the glaze paint (how ever many layers you had to apply according to the bottle label instructions) dry completely, about 24 hours. The piece will need to be placed back into a kiln (placed on a stilt so the piece does not glaze to your shelf, forever) to fire the glaze paint onto your piece. A glaze firing is a Cone 06. Remember: you have to let that firing session cool completely before you remove your piece from the kiln or it will get very small cracks in it from the temperature change. It cannot be taken from a hot environment into a cool environment too fast. The very small cracks it gets in known as crazing. So, Let the kiln Cool Down.
Why
does it takes so long to receive my order!!!???
Honestly. We produce your items when we receive your order and we fill orders on a "first come-first filled"
basis. We have very few items in stock. We have one mold for each
item we sell. Yes, we do try to fill more than one order at a time, but yours
still may be one we have received after several are already being
processed. To give an example of an order is as follows: if you want 12 of
some item, figure it will take business twelve days. A pour a day. Then a couple more days to dry,
because the one item we took out of the mold today still needs a couple of days to dry.
Bisque orders need to be cleaned of mold seam lines, scratches, and detail is
put back into the piece that is worn away when cleaning. That will take a
day or so, sometimes more depending on the piece. It takes about a day to fire and a day to
cool in the kiln. That will make your order about 20 or 23 days to complete
before it can be packaged and shipped. Yes, there is the possibility that
we may get to pour two a day but we do not want to make that guarantee because
most of the time items do not come out of the mold correctly. Therefore the item
will need to be poured again. We are very happy to receive orders such as yours,
but we cannot make your items quicker than it takes to make them.
Most orders can be shipped out to you from 10 to 21 days. If we get
many orders at one time, then orders begin to back up. When orders start
to pile up, shipping gets pushed out to 4 to 6 weeks. Please keep in mind
this product is made by hand. The process takes as long as it is going to
take.
